Telegram Mini App or mobile app: what to choose for your business
A Telegram Mini App opens right inside Telegram with no installation or sign-up, while a mobile app gives full access to the phone and push notifications. We compare the formats and explain the “Mini App first, app later” strategy.
A business needs a convenient service for clients on their phones: a catalogue, ordering, booking, a personal account. Not long ago that almost always meant a mobile app in the App Store and Google Play. Today there is a second option — a Telegram Mini App, an app that opens right inside Telegram. Here is how they differ, when a Mini App is enough, when you cannot do without a native app, and how to combine the two.
What a Telegram Mini App is
A Telegram Mini App (also called a WebApp) is a web application that runs inside Telegram: from a bot button, a link or the bot’s profile. To the user it looks like an app screen: a catalogue with photos, a cart, a booking form, a personal account. Nothing needs to be installed and no sign-up is required: Telegram passes the user’s data to the app, and the server verifies it.
According to the Telegram documentation, a Mini App can now do much more than a simple web page:
- accept payments through connected payment providers, including Google Pay and Apple Pay;
- open full screen and be added as a shortcut to the phone’s home screen;
- request geolocation, use biometrics (fingerprint, Face ID) and scan QR codes;
- store user data in Telegram’s cloud and on the device;
- share messages and stories, and send notifications through the bot.
Comparison: Mini App or mobile app
| Telegram Mini App | Mobile app | |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Not needed: opens from a button in Telegram | Users have to find it in a store, download it and sign up |
| Platforms | One web version for iOS, Android and desktop | Separate iOS and Android builds (or cross-platform code) |
| Development cost | Lower: one front end and one server | Higher: two stores, review, more testing |
| Updates | Live for everyone as soon as they are deployed | Through store review and user updates |
| Publishing | Through the bot, no app stores involved | Apple Developer Program — $99 a year, Google Play — a one-time $25, plus review of every version |
| Phone features | Geolocation, biometrics, QR, haptics, sensors — via Telegram | Full access: background tasks, Bluetooth, NFC, offline mode, widgets |
| Notifications | Bot messages in Telegram | Push notifications on the phone screen |
| Audience | Telegram users only | Everyone who installs the app |
Publishing fees are taken from the Apple Developer Program and Google Play Console pages.
When a Mini App is the best choice
- Your clients already talk to you in Telegram. A channel, a bot or a support chat — the Mini App fits into the client’s usual path without switching to another app.
- Catalogue and ordering. A café menu, a shop catalogue, booking at a salon or clinic, reservations, a loyalty programme.
- You need to launch fast. We build a Mini App with a catalogue, cart and personal account in 1–2 months, and ship changes without waiting for store review.
- Testing an idea. It is cheaper to test a new service or business line in a Mini App than to order two native apps straight away.
- Internal tools. Apps for staff, dealers and couriers: access through a Telegram account, with no separate logins and passwords.
When you do need a native app
- Heavy use of the phone. Background location, Bluetooth devices, NFC, offline mode, demanding graphics.
- An audience outside Telegram. If a significant share of your clients do not use Telegram, a Mini App will not reach them.
- A product people open every day. Banking, taxi and delivery services, driver apps: here an icon on the screen, push notifications and full control over the interface matter.
- App store search. If clients look for the service in the App Store and Google Play, you need an app and app store promotion.
Strategy: Mini App first, app later
A common and sensible path is to start with a Mini App, test demand and usage scenarios, and build a native app once it is clear which features are really needed. The server and API are written once: the Mini App, the website and the future app all work with the same data.
The channels do not have to compete. For the Uzbekistan office of the pharmaceutical group World Medicine, the studio has run a set of services since 2023: a website with a drug catalogue, an iOS app that pulls data from the same catalogue via API, and a Telegram bot. Each channel does its own job, and the data is maintained in one place.
FAQ
How much does a Telegram Mini App cost?
It depends on the screens and integrations: catalogue, cart, payments, personal account, connection to 1C or a CRM. We design the screens and estimate the project for your task; the estimate is free.
Can a Mini App accept payments?
Yes, through a payment provider connected to the bot, including Google Pay and Apple Pay. Under platform rules, digital goods and services inside Telegram are sold for Telegram Stars.
Do users need to sign up?
Usually not: Telegram passes the user’s name and ID to the app, and the server checks the signature of that data. Users can share their phone number on request with one tap.
Can a Mini App later become a regular app?
Yes. The server, database and API stay; only the interface is rebuilt for iOS and Android, and the screen designs serve as the basis for the app.
